Full traceability in the Food Safety industry has been obscured by problems like a lack of uniform identification standards, differing government regulations, limitations of proprietary software systems, and the overall complexity of the food supply. Afilias Discovery Services (ADS) finally provides an answer to these challenges.
Overview of implementing Afilias Discovery Services in a supply chain network
Within a supply chain network, partners use their respective internal business applications to capture life cycle data for products and services, which includes detailed information about the events and transactions that occur in a business process. This stored data enables partners to make business decisions within their own organizations. However, to communicate effectively with one another, supply chain members need a mechanism that enables them to share relevant data in a secure and selective manner.
Afilias Discovery Services (ADS) leverages an open, web services protocol called the Extensible Supply-chain Discovery Service (ESDS) and provides a complementary Object Naming Service (ONS) that is compliant with EPCglobal standards (www.epcglobalinc.org ).
Afilias is offering an ADS Pilot Program to companies interested in testing this new technology. Afilias will provide a toolkit and an open testing environment based on the ESDS open protocol, which is currently in the submission process to the Internet Engineering Task Force www.IETF.org .
ADS Pilot Participant Requirements
Organizations wishing to test the deployment of Afilias Discovery Services need to meet qualifications such as:
ADS enables traceability by providing links to sources of product information along one or more supply chains. This gives tracking and product lifecycle information systems the ability to gather complete information about an product or object's movement through the supply chain.
Decentralized, local ONS and Discovery Services model highlighted in new white paper
NICE, FRANCE - 6 October 2008 - Today, at the Internet des Objets, Internet du Futur Conference, Afilias released a white paper that details a decentralized and interoperable model for implementation of Object Naming Services (ONS) and supporting Discovery Services. This model is intended as one solution to an international debate on the potential problems associated with a single, authoritative ONS system and to promote the widespread adoption of Internet of Things technology for track-and-trace and supply chain management.
